How to Cure Stomach Gas - Symptoms and Treatment

After we finish eating, we begin a process called digestion. During this process, the food we ate is broken down into molecules that our body can use as energy.

However, sometimes the food does not always break down all the way. Instead, the remains make their way into the large intestine and begins fermenting (the process of changing sugar into carbon dioxide).

Bacteria that is stored in our large intestine produce a variety of gases (the products of fermentation) and the vapors that are released are known as intestinal gas (or stomach gas).

The symptoms of intestinal gas include:

• Pain in the abdomen, intestines, or stomach
• Chest pain
• Bloating
• Lack of breath

The main causes of intestinal gas include:

• Drinks that are carbonated (beer, soda, Perrier water)
• Pregnancy
• Flying on an airplane
• A woman's menstrual cycle
• Anorexia
• Chemotherapy
• Dehydration
• Foods with high fiber in them
• Anxiety

Babies and children are not excluded from stomach gas problems. Every child has the same amount of gas stored in their intestines but some have a much easier time passing it. However, if your child frequently goes through this gaseous process, it can lead to terrible discomfort. Nursing or bottle feeding is one of the main causes of stomach gas in children because of the digestion of the different ingredients found in breast milk or formula. Crying can also cause flatulence problems in your child.

Many herbal remedies have been produced to promote a healthy digestive system and to combat the effects of stomach gas.

Ginger has a very long history in the treatment of indigestion, nausea, and flatulence. Fennel is used to help relieve the symptoms of gas and bloating. It's prime ingredient (Carbo. Veg.) absorbs excess gas and toxins that are found in the body. It is also very helpful for people who suffer from frequent constipation and diarrhea.

There are also many foods you can remove from your diet to help prevent stomach gas from occurring.
Lactose is a sugar found in many dairy products and is a very common cause of the gas. Make sure to limit how much milk, cheese, ice cream, and dressings you eat and watch to see if the condition improves.

Raffinose is a sugar that is known to produce gas and is found in beans, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, and whole grains. Fructose is found in onions, pears, artichokes, and wheat and is another food that causes gas. Avoid all artificial sweeteners such as sugar free soda and gum! Carbohydrates and starches have been known to cause excessive gas.

HOW TO CLEAR STOMACH GAS

• Limit fizz intake
• Drink herbal tea
• Keep yourself hydrated
• Don't swallow any air while eating
• Abdominal massage

Any doctor will be able to prescribe you medication for this problem, if it does not go away using natural remedies. Mylanta II, Maalox II, and Di-Gel are common medications that help to make the gas easier to pass through your mouth. However, they have no effect on the actual stomach gas. Lactaid and Lactrase help to aid with the digestion of lactose products. Chewing a lactrase table before you eat will help foods that contain lactose digest much easier. Beano is an over-the-counter digestion aid and contains an enzyme that our bodies originally lack to digest sugar in beans and many vegetables. It comes in liquid and tablet form. Beano, however, does not have an effect on gas caused by fiber or lactose.

Every human being is born with the bacteria needed to form gas but only certain foods have the key needed to begin this whole process. This is something that can be easily avoided. If you take great care in removing certain foods and chemicals from your body, you too can experience a long life without the constant need to “let one rip!”

Stomach Problems & Stomach Acid

A Big Misconception About Stomach Problems

One of the most common mistakes people are making when diagnosing their stomach problems is thinking that the "burning" sensation in your stomach has to be combatted with antacids.  In fact, a lot of discomfort you feel in the stomach along with many health problems (acid reflux, constipation, heartburn) you might have is due to your stomach not producing enough acid.

It turns out that if your stomach doesn't produce enough hydrochloric acid then you can have an overgrowth of bad bacteria (and the yeast Candida Albicans).  With this bacterial and fungal overgrowth present your immune system is gravely impaired.  Not only will you find yourself having problems with gas, burping, acid reflux but because your system cannot break down foods properly you might even end up with skin problems like eczema, hair loss, pimples or just dry skin.  Most importantly, since you don't have enough acid and can't break down your food properly you'll end up feeling tired and sluggish for most of the day even when you did get a good night's sleep.

How Can You Tell If Low Stomach Acid Is A Problem For You?

It's actually quite simple.  If you're suffering from any of the stomach problems I've mentioned in this article then check your house for one of two things.  You'll need either a pickle jar with pickle juice or a bottle apple cider vinegar.  Now right before a  meal drink the apple cider vinegar (you'll want to take 1-2 tbsps mixed with 8oz of water) or pickle juice (enough to fill a shot glass).  Eat your meal slowly and do your best to not over eat.

If you notice that this eliminates your reflux or calms your stomach down considerably then it's very possible that you have low stomach acid.

What's The Fix For Low Stomach Acid?

In my own experience, the best fix for low stomach acid has been following a paleolithic diet.  When I cheat on the diet and eat carbs I make it a point to always avoid gluten and dairy related products.  In order to repair my stomach's ability to produce acid I supplemented with Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar (sorry, but pickle juice just sounded gross) at first drinking it up to three times a day around each major meal.

This regimen has ended years of gas, bloating and severe discomfort in my stomach.  There were  dramatic changes within a week of following a paleolithic diet and supplementing with apple cider vinegar.  Within a few months my stomach had repaired itself considerably and a side effect of my healthier way of eating was losing about 25lbs of fat.     In addition to paleolithic dieting and apple cider vinegar as a supplement I also found the following to help:
  • Chewing my food slowly.  Each mouthful of food requires 15-25 chews before swallowing.
  • Drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day.
  • Meditation - I believe that a lot of my health problems were also related to stress and the over production of cortisol.  Taking the time to meditate and unwind has done a lot to reduce my levels of stress.
