Effective Ways to Prevent Hair Loss

Hair loss can occur at any age and it can be caused by the body’s natural aging process, the presence of an underlying health condition or in women it can also occur due to the use of hormone based contraceptive pills. Whether you are a man or a woman, hair loss prevention should be incorporated into your day to day hair care routine in order to avoid losing any hair. There are many great ways to prevent hair thinning and you can include these in your regular hair care routine at home.

Your Diet

A poor diet, deficient of important nutrients that promote hair growth is generally the primary cause of hair fall under the age of 35. Minerals, such as zinc, iron and calcium as well as vitamins, including vitamin A, vitamin B complex and vitamin C should be vitally important components of your diet, especially if you are looking to maintain a healthy head of hair. Your hair cells are not alive, but your hair follicles are connected to the surrounding skin tissues found on your scalp, which means that they receive nutrients through your blood circulation. Your hair cells are produced inside the hair follicles and in order to produce healthy and strong hair and to avoid hair thinning you need to nourish your hair roots through your diet as well as externally, through good grooming habits.

Your Hair Grooming Habits

If you are losing a lot of hair, avoid the use of harsh, chemical hair treatment products, such as perms, bleach or hair color. Avoid washing your hair daily, as this will weaken your hair and hair follicles further. Wash your hair once or twice a week with a PH neutral shampoo, followed by conditioning. Perhaps switching to a baby shampoo would be a good idea until your hair fall stops. Alternatively try to buy hair care products that are plant based, preferably containing organic plant extracts. Use a hot oil treatment weekly.

There are many excellent hair oils and hot oil treatments available in salons, pharmacies and supermarkets. You can even prepare your own hot oil treatment at home by mixing 10 ml of extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil with 5 drops of chamomile essential oil. Apply this mixture on both your hair and hair follicles, cover your hair with a warm towel and leave the oil on for at least 30 minutes then wash your hair with your mild shampoo.

Hair loss prevention should include using a widely spaced comb or hair brush and brushing your hair very gently at least twice a day. Hair brushing should be done especially gently while your hair is wet. Avoid using cheap rubber bands, which can break, pull and tear out your hair. Avoid hair styles that put stress on your scalp and hair. If you need to put your hair up or tie it back, be sure to do this loosely, without putting pressure on your hair.

Use Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto extract is often prescribed by holistic practitioners and naturopaths for the treatment of hair loss. The extract of this plant will stimulate the hair follicles, increase their cell turnover and therefore effectively improve the rate of hair re-growth. It is available in tincture and supplement forms, which means that you can both take it orally and apply it topically to your scalp.
