Pregnancy affects women in different ways. Even if you've done your research, there are still some changes that could take you by surprise as your pregnancy progresses. Though not serious problems, it is still worth keeping an eye out for the physical and emotional changes that could come your way!
Inability to Concentrate
A number of pregnant woman find themselves experiencing an inability to concentrate in the first trimester. This happens due to a distraction with the baby, and also partially with changes in hormones. Though everything can seem difficult to focus on, force yourself to push through it. Get into the habit of organising your day to keep track of everything that needs doing.
Mood Swings
Mood swings are particularly common during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. You can go from happy to despondent in a matter of minutes and irrational bursts of anger or bouts of crying are widespread. Usually this is nothing to worry about, but if your mood swings do not settle be sure to talk to your doctor.
The Nesting Instinct
A lot of pregnant women find themselves with the sudden desire to clean and decorate in preparation for the imminent arrival. This can range from organising sock drawers to cleaning out garages. This can be very useful and gives you less to have to do once your baby is born. Just remember to put the health of you and your baby first and not to put any strain on you and your baby.
Bra Size
One of the first signs of pregnancy is increased breast size, with breasts becoming swollen due to increased hormone levels. Your rib cage may also expand during pregnancy as your lung capacity increases to allow enough oxygen for the baby as well as yourself. As a result, you may find you'll have to go bra shopping several times during the course of your pregnancy!
Skin
A number of changes can occur to your skin in pregnancy. Due to increased blood flow many women have what is known as the 'pregnancy glow'. Other skin changes can feel more disconcerting. Some women will suffer acne due to increased oil secretion in the skin. As hormones cause the body to produce pigment, others develop yellowish patches called chloasma on their faces. Fortunately, most of these changes will disappear shortly after birth!
Hair and Nails
During pregnancy, the hormones produced by the body will cause hair to grow faster and a lot of women experience changes in texture. Hair may also make a temporary appearance in unwanted places, such as the face, stomach or nipple areas.
Nails too can change. They can grow faster and become stronger for some, while others find an increased tendency of breaking and splitting nails during the course of their pregnancy.
Feet
Because the pregnant body retains extra fluid, many women find that their feet swell, even so much that a bigger shoe size is required. Heels and tight-fitting shoes will be out, with flat, loose fitting shoes a much more comfortable and practical option, especially during summer! Try to put your feet up when you can, whether sitting or in bed. Click here to see the beds we have on offer.
While pregnant your body will go through many often unanticipated changes. They might seem off-putting, but remember, they are only temporary. Once your baby is in your arms it will all seem worth it!
